Memory Tips

Memory Tip: Maintaining and Improving your “Memory Power”

Aging does not destroy memory ability—it is still possible to learn new things, and to retain and recall previously learned material. However, some declines in memory efficiency and recall success do occur as we age. Because of these problems, older adults often want memory experts to wave a magic wand “to make my memory better.” There is no magic cure for age-related memory problems, but partial relief can come in the form of changing your behavior and your attitudes in ways that will enhance your memory potential and your memory skills. Most memory strategies demonstrate positive effects in memory training research with older adults. Most strategies also require hard work and considerable effort. When you master them, you can use strategies to achieve visible, real-world improvements in memory success. The suggestions here are valuable for anyone, at any age, who wants to improve everyday memory skills:
  1. Exercise and maintain good health
  2. Reduce stress, if possible
  3. Maintain a positive self-concept about your memory potential
