Requirements for Strong Letters of Recommendation
I am usually willing to write letters of recommendations for my students and advisees. However, in this context, I would like to stress that Will you write me a letter of recommendation? is not the right question to ask. The more appropriate question is Can you write me a strong letter of recommendation? Strong letters are those whose authors say they know the student well, are willing to make positive statements about the student’s knowledge, skills, and characteristics, and can support these statements with compelling evidence. Please ensure that my evaluation of your knowledge, skills, and characteristics is strongly positive. For example, if you had a C or D in one of my classes, it is difficult for me to write a strong letter of recommendation, in which case it would be in your best interest to ask someone else.
To request a letter of recommendation, please email me the following materials:
I write letters of recommendation on the second Monday of every month. If I receive your materials on the Sunday before the second Monday, then I will write your letter the next day. However, if I receive your information on the second Tuesday of the month, then I will not write your letter until the next month.

- A list of what you did for the lab, if applicable
